Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability Running Shoes

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

If you're on the hunt for a lightweight carbon-plated shoe that can withstand all the miles during a training season with ease, the PUMA Deviate Nitro 3 is a go-to choice for any athlete. Featuring more two-layer nitrogen-infused foam — a soft top layer called Nitro Elite and a responsive bottom layer called Nitro — the Deviate Nitro 3 provides the rebound needed to pick up the pace. Its ideal amount of firmness keeps up the energy of the ride while balancing improved comfort. Embedded inside the midsole is the PWRPLATE, an engineered carbon plate that works with the foam to deliver a snappy toe-off. This midsole setup allows you to enjoy a variety of workouts, whether lacing these up for your long runs or your speed days.

And when it comes to durability, a redesigned PUMAGRIP ATR rubber outsole lines the bottom of the shoe for key grip when you need it. For the upper, an updated breathable mesh offers improved lockdown, while strategically placed PWRTAPE offers support where you need it while keeping weight to a minimum. Overall, the PUMA Deviate Nitro 3 has what it takes to handle the rigors of intense training as well as the fun of everyday runs.

What You'll Love:

  • High rebound makes it easy to turn on the jets
  • More cushioning and lighter weight

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Very tight toe boxI loved my Puma Deviate 2s so much that I ran through 3 pairs. I was disappointed to immediately feel how tight the Deviate 3s were at initial step-in. They feel plusher, but that plushness took away needed space. I could only manage one run in them before having to send them back. I'd suggest at least a 1/2 size up from the Deviate 2s.

Too narrow - lateral foot painI have a normal width foot, so I ignored warnings about the narrow fit of this shoe - big mistake! Ride, cushion, bounce, build quality all outstanding, but lateral foot pain is excruciating after just a few miles (to the point of sitting on the curb to get them off my feet). I’ve tried them several times now, as well as various different insoles, always the same - run-stopping pain after just two or so miles. $160 down the drain. Potentially great shoe I guess if you have narrow feet.

Toe box was too smallThese had too narrow of a toe box for me. I have a narrow heel and that part fit well, but I like for my toes to have more room. They were also a little too firm.

Great for SomeI usually buy whatever shoe "believeintherun" recommends when it's time for me to buy new running shoes. I went from NB 1080s to Skechers Ride 11 to these. Right away they had a great propulsion feel just walking around. On my first run I noticed my legs were tiring more than usual, and the lack of arch support was noticeable with each foot strike. I usually run 3-5 miles and these were great, but just not the level of cushioning and support I prefer. If you don't need arch support and don't need 8-10 / 10 cushioning, I think these are a great shoe for you.

Good shoeThis is my first experience with carbon plated shoes. I’m trying to get back into running after multiple knee surgeries. They feel very good and help me spring forward. They are pretty narrow which works for me. They don’t feel good wearing as an all-day everyday shoe, they are strictly a running shoe. Very pretty, non obnoxious color.

Solid Daily TrainerI've had every version of the Deviate Nitro, and not sure these are my favorite. I do think the upper is an improvement over the first 2 versions. The Midsole seems a bit more firm to me than both prior versions. I know version 2 had Nitro Elite in the forefoot, version 3 seems to only have the Nitro firm. The best comparison I think of to this shoe is the Boston 12 and I prefer the Boston 12 to these, especially with the Boston's lightstrike pro in the forefoot of midsole and the outsole as well. Overall, a solid shoe that I do recommend.

Love everything but the toeboxShoe feels fast and very fun/easy to run in. My only complaint is that the toebox is pretty small, I maybe should have gone for half a size up. Because of this I'll probably never use this on a long run, but that's okay - still great for speed work.

daily trainierI like that it's a fitted upper, and a little firmer midsole than my Asics NB4, but this DN3 outsole still ketches rocks, and it would be nice if the midsole was a smidge wider.

Fast and funPeppy, responsive shoe that benefits when you can lean forward and stay on your toes due to the high drop. The upper is one of the most comfortable that I’ve used. When you pick up the pace you can really feel the shoe come alive with that power plate. The bad, my last run (12 miles) I had some foot pain that became an issue. This is the only run where I’ve experienced this in over 50 miles. The shoe is pretty heavy as well. Other than this, the shoe is fantastic and I’m really enjoying the miles.

Comfortable and Fast100 miles on the shoe so far. Compared to the ASICS Magic Speed 4, these are slightly softer, and more flexible, allowing the shoe to work with the foot and not against. Great for uptempo runs. I’ve taken them up to 18 miles comfortably. Fits true to size but gets slightly narrow in the toe box. Puma grip is great but wears slightly faster than expected.

Perfect for what I wantedFun, but not too fun. Fast, but not too fast. So it's perfect as a daily trainer for me. Fit is snug in the midfoot, but I appreciate it (feels like there's less chance of blisters). Streamlined, but comfortable (upper padding is just enough to not be a racer but not a duvet either). You could probably take it on long runs, but I'd rather use a different shoe, because I'd end up going too fast in this one.

Great RideI think this is a shoe that you can just take out for any kind of run in any condition. The only thing that kept it from getting five stars was the lockdown and laces took me a long time to dial in just right.

Wanted to Love ThemI bought these after reading some positive reviews. The shoes arrived quickly -- Running Warehouse always has great customer service. I tried them on and wore them in the house for an evening. I liked how they looked and they seemed to be a fine pair of shoes but at the end of the evening I decided to return them because the toe box was just too tight. To clarify, my toes felt squeezed by the uppers.

Amazing Workout and Tempo ShoesHave been a huge fan of the Deviate Nitro 2s for 2+ years over 2 pairs. I was really excited to try the 3s after they came out, and they definitely did not disappoint. Fit is true to size (I am Men's 10, D Width) and has a decent amount of cushion. 10mm heel-to-toe drop is a bit more aggressive, but I have been fine with it. I love using these for my road / tempo workouts and on the track. I wouldn't mind racing in them, either, if I weren't already using Vaporfly 3s. Great price for a workout shoe that should last a full year!

Comfort and quality with some hiccupsI've been an almost religious user of Saucony shoes for the last 6-7 years. Recent changes to their lineup have me exploring other options, so enter the Puma Deviate Nitro 3. My background: 50-65 miles a week, >1:30 HM, >3:10 M, running in So. Florida (the humidity capital of the US) The Pros: - The foam is very responsive and I don't feel it breaking down during long runs, it still pops at the end of 15+ mile efforts. - The upper forms around the foot very nicely and I don't feel my foot sliding around at all (note: I'm a 10.5 w/ Saucony, but 11 in PUMA) - The plate helps with the responsiveness and I feel very connected to the ground - I love the color scheme, very bright The Cons: - Yes, the upper is soft and wraps the foot, it's very comfortable, but I would like a bit more structure to the mesh as I feel it stretches quite a bit during long runs, which makes me have to stop during each run to tighten them up. I was hoping they would stretch out fully by now, but 150ish miles in and still no luck. - If you understand Saucony's 'Speedroll' technology, you'll understand how the shoe assists your foot movement through the gait cycle, helping you roll through the toe off. The Deviate doesn't have that, it runs very 'flat footed' in comparison, and is much more noticeable at faster speeds. I land very mid-foot and find I have to work to get through my toe off more than I did with Saucony. I would recommend this shoe to anyone that needs a workhorse of a shoe to stack up miles in. I couldn't imagine doing tempo runs or speedwork in this shoe, but it is very comfortable for those 2+ hour efforts. It holds a bit of weight around the ankle cuff within the foam as the sweat builds up, but I haven't found that to be an issue with my performance, or the performance of the shoe itself. I would but this shoe again without hesitation.

Wish I could've kept themComfortable, stable, and killer color. Never ran in them due to how tight the toe box was from side to side and PUMA has no width sizing for this shoe. No problem with my other running shoes; Nike, HOKA, NB and Asics. I'd buy again if PUMA had them in a wider size.

Disappears on footThis shoe fits my narrow, high arched feet so well and the geometry of the plate matches my mechanics. This results in a shoe that disappears on my foot right out of the box and allows me to run quite naturally. The plate is not as aggressive as some plated shoes, but I think that’s a good thing for a training shoe. I’m surprised how versatile this shoe is. One note: the toebox tapers sharply so wider feet may wish to size up a half size.

Very niceThey fit true to size, with a very comfortable upper. I really appreciate that flat laces and how easy they are tie. The color is definitely loud, and I love it. It really does look great. It's my first time using plated shoes, and I enjoy the bit of added stability that it brings. I often have issues with pain in my Achilles Tendon up the back of my leg, but so far I don't feel it as much with these shoes. These may not feel quite like clouds, but the foam in the midsole does a great job of cushioning the impact of each stride. These shoes have certainly made running a bit more fun again.

Good not greatA lot of very positive reviews for this shoe online. I found it to be only ok and decides to return it. The ride is just ok. It felt a little dull for a plated shoe at easy paces. It did better at faster paces, but the shoe gets heavy from water in the humid summer months (though the insoles do not move around so that is very nice). Outsole grip is excellent and there is enough of it that i think it would last a while. I had issues with the roughness of the upper material giving me blisters on the tops of my toes. They got used to this after a few runs though. Ultimately of this shoe could update the drop to 8mm and lose maybe a half ounce to an ounce of weight, it would run better in my opinion.

Outstanding performance and speedThese running shoes exceeded my expectations in both comfort and durability. The cushioning provides excellent support without feeling too heavy, making long runs much more enjoyable. The grip is solid even on wet surfaces, and the breathable material keeps my feet cool. After several weeks of use, they still look and feel like new. Highly recommended for anyone looking to upgrade their running gear.
