Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral Running Shoes

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stability

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

Built for trail runners who demand both comfort and performance, the Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide adapts to your needs as the miles stack up. Whether it's an ultramarathon or an epic day on the trails, this shoe's soft cushioning, reliable stability, and innovative design will keep you comfortable and supported throughout the entire journey.

The dual-layer Energy Foam+ system is engineered to give you the best of both worlds — responsiveness and comfort. The top layer of PEBA superfoam is thin but lively, providing a snappy ride and helping conserve energy over long distances. Underneath, the thicker layer of Energy Foam combines OBC with EVA, giving you that softly cushioned feel you need to prevent fatigue as the miles wear on. This balance of cushioning and responsiveness is essential for ultrarunners, reducing the impact on your joints while keeping your stride efficient.

The outsole is designed to minimize hotspots and pressure points, two major causes of discomfort on long runs. By using cupolas — small, dome-like structures — the shoe diffuses pressure evenly across the foot, reducing foot pain and helping to prevent fatigue. This thoughtful design means you can stay focused on your run, not your feet. The same idea is brought into the upper. As your feet swell over long distances, the adaptive upper flexes and molds to your foot to ensure a comfortable fit throughout your run.

The Salomon S/Lab line is built for performance. To achieve your very best on the trails, you need to be able to navigate technical terrain with confidence. The S/Lab Ultra Glide delivers with its high sidewalls, which cradle your foot and keep it supported in place. So, even when your legs start to tire, you feel stable with each step. Completing the shoe is a sticky Contagrip outsole. Whether facing slick wet surfaces or dry rocky paths, Contagrip is built for the widest variety of surfaces, so you can feel secure no matter where your run takes you.

The Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide isn't just a running shoe — it's a game changer for anyone looking to conquer long-distance runs without sacrificing comfort. From reducing foot pain with its pressure-relieving outsole to delivering soft and dynamic cushioning that adapts to your stride, this unparalleled shoe ensures you're always ready to go the extra mile.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Provide support to footGreat stability; decent cushion; esthetically great only problem it hurts above the heel. Great for running and tracking and good materials used.

HUGE bummer of a shoeFor a shoe that is touted as a 100 mi + shoe...this is not the one for me. If you're running flat, straight miles, this is a fine shoe...but the side walls (where the foam rolls up around the heel for support), rub into the ankle and cause excruciating blisters. I will be returning these sadly.

A Game ChangerIf max cushioned trail running shoes are the new standard, other brands should take notice because Salomon just raised the bar. These are already exceeding my expectations in every way. The comfort and cushioning they promise are evident from the moment you put them on. What I wasn't expecting was the ability they give me to absolutely BOMB downhills and descents with confidence. The foam underfoot absorbs every step and the way the sidewalls cradle the foot provides a level of control and confidence that I've never felt in a trail shoe with this kind of stack height. Needless to say, this will be my GO TO long distance trail shoe for the foreseeable future.

Favorite Trail Shoe EVERThis shoe feels great underfoot. It is incredibly comfortable and it is surprisingly nimble. The sideways make it feel super stable and the unique tread feels great on trail (and road!). I think I am ready to claim this shoe as my favorite trail shoe of all time.

Great shoe, big achilles issueThis shoe appeared to be a perfect fit for me, and in most aspects, it indeed was. It’s incredibly soft, supportive, and comfortable, except for the achilles area. For some inexplicable reason, these shoes rubbed my achilles to the point of oblivion and even caused some muscular pain after attempting a long run in them. Regrettably, this issue renders the shoe unsuitable for me. For a shoe that I should be able to comfortably run 100 miles in, it’s disheartening to encounter such problems. Shoe companies must address these issues promptly. I’m not sure if they’re testing on the wrong individuals, but it seems like many people online have also reported the same problem.
