Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Great trail runnersThe traction on these shoes have been great for any trail condition I've come across, from rocky to muddy. The fit is roomy enough for my slightly wider feet!

Comfy and VersatileI know the Genesis won the most popular trail shoe award, but I think this shoe is Salomon's unsung hero and I wish they would continue it. It is like a beautiful mesh of the speedcross/ultraglide. It is incredibly comfortably from the moment you slip it on and I have worn this for multiple 50 milers and 100 milers. It performs well on wet rock/mud and also has a decent pop and response on pavement. This shoe can conquer any terrain or distance and is incredibly affordable compared to other options. Snag some before they are gone forever.

Salomon Thundercross Great Shoe!I am very happy with the treads and grip this shoe has provided over the rocky, rooty terrain. I like the upper which is snug enough to keep the ankle in place. Very happy with this purchase.

Similar to the Mission XI was obsessed with the Salomon Mission X trail runners (did two Caminos in them) and devastated when they were discontinued. From what I can tell, these new Salomons are closest to those, but with a few important differences. They have a much lower heel drop (4mm instead of 10mm) and a much longer string tie, which is super annoying because there's no where to put it to keep it out of your way. They've got good traction and are generally comfortable, and have performed well on shorter (less than 5 miles) hikes, but remains to be seen how they'll do on longer treks.

Most comfortable SalomonI’ve used the Speedcross for years which was great for technical trail running, but I always had to get oversize because of the narrow toe box. Because of its toe box stiffness and narrow front, its limited how far I run with them. The Thundercross has a wider toe box with more flex. It is the most comfortable, best fitting Salomon I’ve ever run in! My trail range in this one is so much further. If you need a relatively wide toe box (but not wide enough to get an actual wide size shoe), you will love this one! I’m geting another pair! I’ve been fit for shoes before, but nothing fits and runs like these! I love Clifftons and this fit is better for me than even those.

Great shoeI had the speedcross. So enjoyed way it handled muddy, technical terrain. The 10mm drop caused discomfort for my hips. I was introduced to the thundercross, and with the 4mm drop, I am back in the Solomon shoe. This sole technology with aggressive lugs and set up, allows me to get up muddy, slippery, steep climbs. I don’t have to stop to dig mud from the lugs. It’s the shoe for all the terrains I choose. When asked how I’m getting through the muddy terrain, I tell them it’s the shoes. Every opportunity I get, I sing the praises of the Solomon thundercross.

Exactly what I neededGreat balance of higher midsole stack, great grip, stable and comfortable. I have been running in SLAB pulsars for couple of years and still love them, but I'm looking for something with more midsole as I get older. I'm glad to try Thundercross and find out it is exactly what I was looking for. Ultra Glide 2 seemed to be too plush, and unstable. Thundercross seems bit more firm and stable. I really like the fit, it is bit wider than the SLAB pulsar, better lock down than Ultra Glide 2, best outsole grip. I'm looking forward to racing and training in these for 2024. I'm also excited that Winter Cross Spike is the same shoe with spikes and gaiter. Great job Salomon
