Cushioning Level

Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Technologies

MIDSOLE

  • DREAM superfoam is a nitrogen-injected supercritical blend of PEBA/EVA. This main bottom layer forms the full length of the shoe and provides high rebound and longevity. The secondary 10 mm top drop-in layer of supercritical EVA delivers additional underfoot plushness and responsiveness.
  • VECTIV 3.0 carbon fiber plate technology includes a two plate system. The bottom-loaded, full-length, carbon fiber plate becomes three-pronged in the forefoot for adaptability on technical terrain. The top-loaded full-length H-plate of recycled carbon/TPU focuses solely on stability, with dual wings along the midfoot and forefoot.
  • Rocker geometry enables long-lasting propulsion.

OUTSOLE

  • SURFACE CTRL rubber creates a 1-piece outsole with 3.5 mm lugs for excellent traction on varied terrain. 10% of the rubber is sourced from smallholder regenerative farms.

UPPER

  • Seamless engineered mesh of TPU and recycled polyester is supportive, hydrophobic, and quick-drying. The upper is 51% recycled.
  • Skeletal support underlays and integrated tongue wings provide a precise foothold.

Love these, wish they were a bit more durableI have about 170 miles on these and they are showing significant signs of wear. To be fair I am in the SoCal desert and the trails are hard and there are quite a bit of rocks… I bought these for the cushion and they are fantastic in that regard. I have numerous pairs of TNF trail runners … and they all wear quickly. Hopefully in the future they will have more durable outsoles etc. Having said all that, I’d recommend them and may buy them again.

Love this shoeMy new race day shoe. This shoe has been the most comfortable and responsive trail shoe I own. I did have to cut the wings off as they irritated my forefoot, but other than that I have no real complaints. The tongue does dry a little slow but it is ridiculously hot in Texas at the moment. If you’re looking for a comfortable and responsive shoe for long days on the trail I would give these a try.

Plush comfort long effort goodnessAs much as I would like to hate this shoe, so I would never have to pay 250 dollars again….I probably will. 11 miles straight out of the box in the Boulder front range, then 18 1/2 a week later doing 4 of the 5 peaks of the skyline traverse. No blisters or hot spots. I used ininji ultra socks(thicker in weight) and they did great. Wings are there, but the plate hasn’t caused me issues to far. I notice it a bit….but wonder if I would have if I hadn’t read the reviews about it prior. Upper is very comfortable, rubber is all good…tho I do wonder how long those lugs will last. My only real complaint is due to plate being at the top of outsole, at times while high stepping rock steps it gets a little squishy and not as firm as I like for that type of climbing. Overall tho, very please with the shoe. Will be interesting to see how many miles I get out of a pair vs the 250 cost. This foam tho with the plate is the perfect balance of rebound pop. Most Hokas I can’t do because they are too squishy- SG’s especially. If this shoe was 200 or less, it would fly off the shelves. Thanks TNF for investing some R&D into your line.

Chopping wings!!Problems with the wings digging into my feet! Took exacto knife and chopped them off and problem solved. Floating and bouncing shoe, super comfy with a little bit of instability.

Trail Super ShoeGreat shoe with exceptional propulsion and an energetic ride! The Pebax/Eva midsole is the star of the show without question. North Face are onto something great!! HOWEVER, a few issues work against it. 1. The Insole. It's pretty much useless. Not only is it too thin and does nothing to protect from the medial and lateral sections of the carbon plate, it has no purchase on the underside, so when wet, it just moves around inside the shoe, especially forwards on the downhills, which is such an annoyance. Either stick it, or removed, or better yet, replace it with a thicker and more structured insole. I use the Currex Pro insole and it works a treat. 2. The Upper. It's so breathable that small debris find their way in with ease. So, expect to have to clear out your shoes sometime during your long run. Road upper possibly, but for trail? 3. 60km in and the carbon outer fold on the medial side of the right shoe has come unglued from the midsole. Not sure how it will play out over time but it should not happen for such a pricey shoe. HOWEVER.... all issues aside, what a fantastic shoe!! It's lively and it keeps you bouncing like a champ even 30+km in. It will for sure be my go-to racing shoe this summer. Definitely a long distance high performance trail super shoe! Absolutely love it! Makes me want to try out its little sister/brother, the Vectiv Summit Sky. A little more dialed in fit, for more technical trails and shorter distances. Some Pebax in the midsole. That should be a fun one too.

BlistersHad high hopes, first 8 mile run went great. The next twenty provided me with two bad blisters thanks to those wings. 50-80 MPW mostly trails of Appalachia

Bummed it did not workI was very excited to use this for all my trail racing knowing it had the bouncy responsive midsole. I tried them for any easy run and faster run and it feels great other than pain on my feet where the carbon plate wings push on the side of my feet. I hoped it just needed break in time, but I took it on a 5k trail race and the shoe performed great other than blisters on both my feet from the carbon wings on the forefoot. I hoped to use for a half and full marathon, but if I got blisters on the 5k I know it would get more painful the longer I run. I think without the wing plate it would still be stable and not cause blisters. I had to return them. I hope they change it next iteration because the shoe performs really well.
