Cushioning Level
Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.-
Barefoot
0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.
-
Minimal
14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.
-
Low
19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.
-
Medium
24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.
-
High
29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.
-
Maximal
35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.
Stability Level
-
Neutral
Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.
-
Stable
Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.
Product Details:
Don't be deceived by the "Racer" nameeven Topo Athletic will openly tell you that the MTN Racer 4 isn't a pure racing shoe. But DO believe that it's absolutely one of the best trail running shoes in the game. With the versatility for consistent daily miles, long runs, and fast paces over gnarly paths, it can do it all.
If you loved v3, you'll be happy to know that v4 retains the same excellent midsole and outsole setup. Its tuned ZipFoam cushioning delivers a lighter and more responsive ride than earlier formulations. And the high-stacked geometry delivers the ideal balance of cushioned underfoot protection and simple speedy agility. Further, we can trust that the rugged and durable outsole retains the legendary slick-surface traction of Vibram Megagrip rubber.
Crucially, the engineered mesh upper is now a slightly snugger fit throughout its entire length. Of course, the classic Topo fit principles still apply: a roomy toe box with a secure midfoot and heel. Now, the upper fit will provide even better security on technical trails. To cap it all off, we've been gifted with an improved gaiter attachment system and a truly premium FKT insole. Made of beaded closed-cell TPU, this insole is non-absorbent for faster drainage and is dramatically more cushioned and responsive directly underfoot.
Altogether, take on any trail run with confidencechoose the quiver-killer Topo Athletic MTN Racer 4 and experience the difference yourself!

- ZipFoam is an upgraded EVA blend that continues to evolve to be lighter and more responsive than earlier versions. It offers an ideal balance of resilient performance with the right measure of cushioned and protective comfort.
- FKT insole is Topo's special sockliner of bouncy TPU foam. This beaded closed-cell foam type is non-absorbent to resist water accumulation and pamper your feet with extra cushiony responsiveness.
OUTSOLE
- Vibram Megagrip provides industry-leading grip on variable surfaces and especially on wet rock sections. Deep and durable lugs deliver ultimate utility across technical terrain.
UPPER
- Engineered mesh incorporates recycled materials and creates a slightly snugger fit throughout for improved performance on technically-demanding landscapes. Topo's signature fit always pairs a roomy toe box with a secure midfoot and heel.
- Improved gaiter system now features a more universal hook-and-loop attachment at the heel, plus the standard D-ring at the tongue base.
