Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

Product Details:

The Topo Traverse blends protection and a secure fit to ignite trail enthusiasts with the drive to tackle even the most challenging technical terrain. The shoe's lightweight Zip foam midsole not only offers a comfortable on foot experience but also delivers a nimble and connected to the ground feel. A forefoot rock plate works together with the foam to shield your feet from jagged rocks and stray branches. For a plush step-in feel, the insole is made with TPU beads which aid in the shoe's comfort while also allowing for water to drain quickly in wet conditions.

A Vibram Megagrip outsole allows trail runners to boldly explore rugged trails with superior traction that instills confidence in every step. To keep your feet protected and locked in, the shoe features a tightly woven mesh upper that resists abrasion while securely fastening your foot into the shoe. All of this comes together with Topo's signature foot-shaped design that allows toes to spread, making the Topo Traverse a versatile trail running shoe with the comfort to tackle any trail run or hike.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

Amazing Thru Hike ShoeI used this shoe to hike 420 miles in the Spanish Pyrenese this past summer and was the perfect shoe to handle 15 - 20 mile days. Paired with a Currex insole and it handled all terrain from slippery wet, mud, and rugged boulder hopping well. The tread was just starting to meet its end at the end of the trail so really happy with this performance. It is a wide toe box shoe, but those with wider feet would struggle with the snug midfoot.

An improvement on the Ultraventure ProAfter thousands of miles of trail running/hiking/backpacking over the years, I have my list of requirements pretty dialed in for trail shoes: wide toe box, decent cushion, some stability, rock plate, and a drop of more than zero. The now-discontinued Ultraventure Pro ticked all these boxes, and I really liked it. The new Traverse does the same with a couple key differences. First is the vaunted FKT insole. I was a bit skeptical trying the shoes on for the first time, wondering how wet or sweaty feet would cope with an insole that is "tacky" vs. traditional fabric insoles. The answer is it is fine. I have not fully submerged the shoes yet to compare how they perform when soaked vs. a traditional insole, but they certainly do not feel any worse. The second difference is fit. The Traverse seems to run at least a half size smaller than the Ultraventure Pro (in fact, holding the insoles side by side in the same size, you can actually see that the Traverse ones are shorter). I had to size up from an 11.5 to a 12 and the Traverse still feels like a more secure shoe with less lateral slop. I may try going to a 12.5 at some point for longer trips at altitude with thicker socks, but for now the 12 is really good. I have only used these for hiking and backpacking so far, not running. But they held up great when backpacking with a 30lb. pack on a multi-day backcountry trip and I would have no concerns trying them on a long trail run.

Finally found MY trail shoe!As someone with collapsed metatarsal and transverse arches and bunionettes, I've spent years suffering from bruised toes and blackened toenails from multi-day hikes with steep climb and descent. After a recent Costa Brava hike that cost me both big toenails, I spent months and serious $$ trying to find a hiking shoe that wouldn't destroy my feet. I finally settled on the Topo Traverse...and tried them out on the Kumano Kodo in Japan. They sailed thru torrential rains and steep rocky descents and left my feet happy and healthy with nary a hot spot or aching tendon. THANKYOU Topo!! I am now a loyal Traverse customer for life! Please never change a thing about this incredible hybrid shoe!

Great shoe with wider toe boxI was wearing the Topo Ultraventure Pro but found that shoe to be discontinued. This shoe seemed to be similar - wide toe box, lower drop, some cushion and grip/traction. It has performed as I had hoped. The traction is most important and the wide toe box helpful as I'm getting older.

Didn't feel goodI was excited to try these shoes - it's hard to find a stability trail shoe. Unfortunately, they didn't work for me - I felt like my foot rolled inward and there was too much pressure on the medial side of the heel.
