Overview

With refinements to the comfort and storage, the UltrAspire Alpha 5.0 Vest is ready to dominate the trails whether you are racing against others or simply running against yourself. Featuring a number of beneficial updates, the Alpha 5.0 adds UltrAcool Light Mesh for faster sweat-wicking and cooler on-body temperatures. Also, the updated magnetic closure on the back allows for the securing of larger items with easy access while on the run. And lastly the addition of new underarm pockets offers additional storage, and an improved shock cord design can secure your gear or trekking poles on the back.

This pack's ErgoFit design uses a blend of angled straps and weight-balancing that naturally adapts to your body's movement while reducing fatigue. A water-resistant, magnet-sealed pocket on the left shoulder strap can safely store hydration pills and tablets, while multiple pockets on the front and side can accommodate your favorite hydration bottles and gear, such as gloves or a headlamp. Nutrition and extra layers fit easily within the rear compartment and can be pulled out on the go through the magnet sealed side openings.

Alpha 5The lumbar access pouches are nice for center of gravity storage of water but I had to take off vest to grab water bottles. Vest is marketed with easy access to this area of the vest. Im not setting speed records so this was not much bother. No bottles came with this vest and at the cost it really should have as there bottles are currently out of stock.

Best mid-distance running vestIn terms of pockets, everything is where it belongs. Perfect for long runs. I recommend using the 550mL Ultraflask Hybrid bottle instead of the Ultraspire Softflask 500mL. Effective water wicking textile that will always stay dry. Trekking poles fit nice and snug while running. Definitely quality alongside the big names like Salomon, Ultimate Direction, etc.

A vest for many occasionsThis vest is really what I was looking for. I specifically wanted: hydration options front and back. Bungee chest closure. Side pockets. This vest has all that and the side pockets are placed low enough under my arms to eliminate any chance of chafing on my arms, which was an issue with other pack straps. There is literally a pocket for everything! I especially love the quick access pocket on the back-perfect for a jacket or other larger item that you don’t want on the chest but may want to get without taking off the pack. I was afraid the pack would be too hot because there’s so much area in the back-it covers from my shoulders to the small of my back (I’m 65”) but I just tested it on an 8 mile run in the sun and it was fine. My only issue (and I suspect I just need to size down, which I plan to do) is that the shoulder straps are too I’m big for me and were constantly slipping around. It didn’t exactly chafe but it drove me crazy. So I’ll try the smaller size and if this vest were a little more customizable for fit it would be perfect. Also I wish it had a magnetic clip for the hydration hose. It’s fine tucking it in the loops but I was spoiled with my other vest (UltrAspire Astral) and really like the magnet. It would be easy to add one though so not a big deal. I love this vest and it may not look as streamlined and cool as other big name running vests, but I think UltrAspire vests (and gear in general) just takes it to another level of functionality and detail. Well worth the money. I use the vest for long runs (over 2 hours) and shorter hikes with my dog because I can keep his water and stuff in the front.
