The Best Stability Running Shoes of 2024 ft DOR
Updated: December 10, 2024 by Grace Booth

What are Stability Running Shoes?
Stability shoes are specifically designed to support and stabilize your stride by reducing overpronation—when the foot rolls too far inward toward the arch. With advanced elements, such as firmer midsole foams under the arch and bumper-like rails along the midsole, these shoes guide your foot toward a more neutral alignment, ensuring a healthier and happier running experience. In addition to cutting-edge running shoe technology now incorporated into stability shoes, there is an optimal stability shoe for every runner's unique requirements.
Who Needs Stability Shoes?
While not every runner or walker will need a stability-focused running shoe, having one can elevate your running experience if you need that extra support. Whether you're dealing with plantar fasciitis, underdeveloped arches, flat feet, or simply searching for a little extra support during your runs, we teamed up with Doctors of Running's own Matt Klein for his take on the best stability shoes to cater to your individual needs.

The Best Overall Stability Running Shoe

Why our experts like it: Offering an exceptional blend of support, comfort, and durability that caters to a wide range of runners, the ASICS Gel Kayano 31 solidifies its spot as our top pick for best stability running shoes. A staff favorite and bestseller renowned for its dependable performance, the Kayano 31 introduces ASICS' innovative 4D Guidance System, which replaces the traditional medial post with a softer, more responsive platform. This change allows for a smoother ride by gently guiding the foot back into alignment, making it perfect for overpronators and neutral runners alike. Whether we are running long distances, walking, or spending hours on our feet, the Kayano 31 offers the perfect balance of stability and cushioning, making it an ideal choice for runners seeking both performance and comfort in their daily trainers. The shoe's FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS ECO midsole adds a layer of plush cushioning and energetic bounce, ensuring every run feels light and effortless. Additional upgrades, like the new knit collar construction, enhance breathability and comfort, while the redesigned Hybrid ASICSGRIP outsole boosts traction and durability on various surfaces.
Pros: Smooth, protective ride for all daily runs, plush and secure upper, comes in a variety of widths
Cons: Lacking versatility for speedier workouts
Team Thoughts: "The Kayano 31 is comfortable, stable, and cushioned enough for the long haul with a surprising amount of bounce from the slight tweaks ASICS made to the midsole. I love using the Kayano for my daily runs, walks, and casual days when I know I'll be on my feet all day." Grace, Web Content Editor

Best Stability Shoe for Daily Training

Why our experts like it: For everyday runs, the Saucony Guide 17 is a dependable partner, delivering cushioned support with an energetic ride and excellent durability. The latest iteration has undergone an overhaul with the most innovative incorporation of Saucony's Center Path Technology. Staying true to a well-cushioned underfoot experience, the updated wider base with higher sidewalls cradles your foot as the improved stability platform guides your stride for an efficient gait cycle. Where the old versions of the Guide had a medial post on the inner side of the shoe, version 17 uses its geometry on both the inside and outside of the shoe to gently guide you to the center. Enhancing the ride even further, Saucony delivers a PWRRUN+ sock liner for a plush sensation as soon as you place your foot in the shoe. We recommend the Guide as a reliable option for runners in search of a comfortable daily trainer offering overpronation support.
Pros: Smooth, no-fuss ride for enjoyable daily miles, well cushioned for daily mileage
Cons: Not the most responsive/speedy option
Team Thoughts: "While the Guide does not have a cloud-like softness, the shoe’s cushioning is soft without feeling sluggish, and the rocker geometry works with the outsole flex grooves to deliver a smooth ride that is great for walks, long runs, and easy cruising miles. Because the shoe's stability does not rely on a stiff medial post, this is a shoe that even neutral runners can enjoy, especially for recovery runs when they want underfoot protection that does not feel unstable." FAQ
-
What is pronation?
Pronation is a process that we hear a lot about within the running community. Usually referenced negatively, pronation is actually a perfectly natural process that is critical for helping our bodies absorb the forces of striking the ground. While running or walking, our arches collapse inward when our feet hit the ground, distributing the energy of the impact safely throughout the body. This collapsing of the arch is what we refer to as pronation. Although every runner pronates to some degree, it can occur at vastly different levels in each runner, the extremes of which can be problematic and lead to common overuse injuries like Achilles tendinitis, shin splits, IT band syndrome, and patellofemoral pain (runner's knee). Check out our Gait Analysis for a free online assessment to discover your degree of pronation. -
Who should use stability shoes?
Stability shoes are designed for runners and walkers who have flat feet or overpronate, which is when the ankle rolls too far inward when running. To correct this, they are built with extra support in the midsole and upper to help keep the wearer's feet in a neutral position. Neutral runners and those who supinate may be comfortable in nearly any kind of shoe, but overpronators can benefit greatly from a shoe with added stability. Stability running shoes contain special features that prevent the arch from collapsing and the ankle from rolling excessively inward, thus avoiding potential pain and injury. There are numerous types of stability shoes featuring various technologies that offer anywhere from minimal to maximal support. - Can I use stability shoes for walking?
Stability running shoes have similar qualities to walking shoes, making them a perfect option for walkers. For example, both stability shoes and walking shoes offer stability and comfort through a supportive upper and stable midsole. They also provide a smooth heel-to-toe transition with enough cushioning for all-day comfort and plenty of ground protection. Whatever shoes you choose, it's important to find the right fit. In both walking and running shoes, you should have about a thumb's width of space between the end of your big toe and the front of the shoe when standing. For walking shoe recommendations, check out our picks for the best Men's and Women's walking shoes. -
Can I add insoles or orthotics to stability shoes?
We do not recommend adding an insole or orthotic to a stability shoe. Inserts that are designed to interact in a certain way with the foot don't do well in a shoe that's also trying to act upon the foot. If you plan to use an insole with added arch support or a custom orthotic, it's best to pair it with a neutral shoe that has enough volume to allow the insert to perform its intended role. Read our guide, How to Choose the Best Running Insoles, to discover the right type of insole for your running needs.
