Individual Thoughts

The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 2 stands out as an aggressively speedy, high-performance training or race day shoe. The snug, race-day fit feels perfect for faster efforts, though some runners may need sizing up by half a size for optimal comfort. With some minor adjustments, I had no issues throughout the testing period. The stylish design further adds to its appeal.
The midsole of the Wave Rebellion Flash 2 delivers a compelling mix of responsiveness, inherent stability, and protection, with an admittedly aggressive overall design. Featuring ENERZY and ENERZY LITE+ foam, the Flash 2 offers springy toe-offs that make shorter training runs particularly enjoyable. The integrated WAVE PLATE adds stability without compromising the natural progression of my stride. While the midsole's firmness may be too aggressive for me on longer distances, it excels in uptempo training sessions, especially for runs under five miles. This version of the Rebellion Flash is notably more balanced compared to its predecessor, which was criticized for being overly rigid, and the Rebellion Flash 2 represents a significant upgrade.
When it comes to the outsole, the Wave Rebellion Flash 2 excels in traction and durability, particularly on paved surfaces. The G3 rubber provides excellent grip, even on wet roads, ensuring secure footing during various workouts. Despite a central groove that tends to collect small rocks, the shoe remains highly effective on road surfaces. After testing, the overall durability suggests the shoe can handle significant mileage, making the Rebellion Flash 2 a reliable choice for road runners looking for a versatile and durable fast-day training companion.
Our In-Depth Look
Upper
Kaleb: "The second you put on the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 2 you know you are in for a speedy ride. The fit was perfectly snug with a highly secure wrap tailor-made for speed training. Initially, it felt slightly short in my usual size 8, especially in the toe box, requiring careful consideration for sizing up by half a size. However, after some adjustments, it proved a suitable choice for runners who prioritize having a secure, race day fit. Also, like the Rebellion Pro, I love how these look on foot, giving me that little extra swagger needed when faced with a tough workout."
Midsole
Kaleb: "The midsole performance of the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 2 is impressive, but be forewarned, when you wear these shoes, you better be ready to push yourself. Like other shoes in uptempo training or race day categories, the Rebellion Flash 2 is designed for speed and hard workouts, sporting an aggressive midsole and plate design that is fairly firm underfoot. As someone who prioritizes protection and comfort, admittedly, the Flash's midsole configuration was a bit more aggressive than I would like for longer efforts.
That said, the ENERZY, ENERZY LITE+ midsole provides a highly responsive ride with a springy toe-off, making shorter training runs feel pretty awesome. Additionally, the WAVE PLATE adds a nice touch of stability without feeling overly rigid, allowing for a natural stride. Despite the aggressive setup, the midsole's performance really shined through, and I will continue to use the Rebellion Flash 2 for uptempo training runs on the roads and track, but will likely reserve them for efforts under the 5-mile mark. Overall, the midsole in the Wave Rebellion Flash 2 has exceeded my expectations, and I have been really impressed with what Mizuno has been producing this year!"
Outsole
Kaleb: "The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 2's outsole delivers excellent traction and durability for fast road runs. The G3 rubber grips well on various surfaces, especially wet roads, ensuring secure footing in diverse conditions. Extensive rubber coverage contributes to the shoe's durability, and I expect the Flash to go beyond the 250 to 300-mile mark. However, the central groove collects small rocks, limiting the shoe's effectiveness on anything other than road or rubber surfaces.
Despite this, the outsole's performance shines on road and paved surfaces, making it suitable for a variety of workouts from easy runs to tempo sessions. I did not notice abnormal signs of wear, suggesting the shoe can handle substantial mileage before the grip diminishes."
Comparable Models
Mizuno Rebellion Flash 2 vs. HOKA Mach X
Kaleb: "Both the Rebellion Flash 2 and Mach X are speed training shoes designed with a midsole plate and a layer of supercritical foam. That said, these are two very different shoes. From the fit to the midsole performance, the Rebellion Flash 2 is much more aggressive, delivering a more snug, race-day fit and a firmer, more explosive midsole configuration.
On the other hand, the Mach X is smooth and efficient out on the roads with a more accommodating fit. I like both shoes, but I would pair them with different runs. I plan to use the Mach X for longer uptempo efforts and even daily runs, but the Flash 2 I will be reserved for my hardest, fastest training days when pace is my top goal."
Mizuno Rebellion Flash 2 vs. Mizuno Rebellion Flash
Kaleb: "The original Rebellion Flash was very firm, and ultimately, I found it too aggressive for me and my training needs. The Rebellion Flash 2 is an excellent upgrade, and though the shoe maintains its aggressive DNA, the midsole configuration is much more balanced. Though I plan to still use the Flash 2 for shorter, faster efforts, I am sure runners will appreciate all the great updates."
