Cushioning Level

  • Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.

  • Barefoot

0-13mm. The Shoe generally does not have a midsole and feels like there is no cushioning. This shoe is all about feeling the ground underfoot.

  • Minimal

14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.

  • Low

19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.

  • Medium

24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.

  • High

29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.

  • Maximal

35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.

Stability Level

  • Neutral

Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have a built-in technology to correct movement.

  • Stable

Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

How We Measure Our Shoe Specs

  • We measure every shoe in-house to provide accurate and consistent details.

  • Weight

The weight is based on a Men's size 9 for Men's and Unisex shoes or Women's size 8 for Women's shoes. The weight listed is for a single shoe, including the laces.

  • Heel Stack

The heel stack refers to how high your heel sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Forefoot Stack

Forefoot stack refers to how high the ball of the foot sits above the ground when wearing shoes. Based on Men's size 9 as the standard.

  • Heel-toe Offset

Heel-toe offset (drop) is the difference in height between the heel stack and the forefoot stack. We use the number given to us by the brand.

How We Measure Shoe Fit

  • All measurements are based on Medium width.

  • Fit (width) options are Narrow - Snug - Average - Roomy - Wide.

  • Sizing (length) options are Short - True - Long. Note: fit is relative to the "average" running shoe.

  • We partner with SmartLast, a program by Heeluxe, to use advanced shoe-measuring technology, to provide objective measurements for toe box, midfoot, and heel widths as well as overall length.

high end, optimized for trail speed,Major prerequisite for this shoe: you must be ok running in a higher stack shoe on trails. .....and if your feet jive with Asics lasts, you might work well with this shoe on some dirt terrain. I enjoy running my local trails with tne superblast 2s, except they struggle on climbs. I finally bought a pair of these Metafuji units about 3 weeks and everything is rad except for the tounge. I dont know how Asics does it, but the upper is minimal, yet securely holds my foot - generous toe box width/ height, non strangling midfoot, not too bad heel zone - micro heel lift on climbs. Midsole is plush with moderated bounce.... plate probably stabilizes foam. Foam directly under heel probably a bit too soft on down hills and could use about 5 to 10mm of extra width over all. Plate is not too noticeable in terms of firmness. That plate will actually bend 180 degrees at the toe box without too much effort and without breaking. I really like the micro treads for our local dry/damp dirt trails. The tongue and laces are lame. Tongue needs the gusset location, padding, and length of Superblast 2.A bit too much migration and hints of lace bite. I use all eyelet and lace up normally - tongue just makes it over the top lace cross. Toss flimsy stock laces and install 10 Second brand 50 inch fluoro green bubble laces. The 5mm offset is perfect combined with the high toe spring. The high toe spring is helpful on non steep climbs. On steep climbs I get a bit of heel lift and have to spend extra energy dealing with the cadbon plate. Id love to see a non carbon plated Metafuji 2. The more predictable the trail, the faster these shoe go. Me - bodyweight 155lbs, 30-50weekly miles, trails only, neutral landing, california dirt trails.

Pretty fun! After 17 years of running trails I’ve finally found a fun shoe! I used to love a close to the ground feel but as I’ve gotten older my feet don’t really appreciate that option. The Metafuji offers some of the same responsiveness and cushion that you get with a good long distance road shoe! My legs (10 days out from Boston) felt springy, agile and energetic, and my feet loved the cushioning! The only negative is that you can turn an ankle in them and they’re not necessarily ideal for walking a trail as they’re not as rock solid stable as some trail shoes. But definitely fun to run in!

West Texas WorkhorseTook out for the first time on a mix of road, packed trail with some slightly technical sections and they were amazing! Outstanding cushion, reminds me of a Superblast 2 for the trail. Could require some strong ankles due to heel roll. Overall, I'm very pleased to have them. We will see if they are ultra ready this May at the Chupacabra 53K.

Fast Ride for Rolling TrailsHave the great Asics fit like the majority of the line. The grip is solid. These are a perfect ride for rolling trails with moderate technicality. First run I broke them in on a 20 miler with flooding creeks and they held up great. Have put another couple runs in them and enjoying having a great super shoe for the trail. Would avoid very technical terrain with the stack height and squish in the shoe would be easy to roll an ankle.

Comfortable Trail KISS BootsI was really hoping these would be 100-miler ready, but probably only for the elite field; these are tall-stacked, a bit soft and wobbly in the heel, but they do have really good grip on the modified ASICSgrip outsole. Just wish ASICS would give us a more stable FFTurbo trail racer, lower to the ground - 32/26 stack, with some grip, and it would be THAT much lighter, and more useful for 99% of all runners. But this thing is really comfortable, I'd just be cautious on technical terrain especially if you're a heel striker as in the heel you'll find a lot of mush from the FFBlast+. Caution: for the strong-ankled.
