Individual Thoughts

LoucasOverall Score: 9.5/10

Honestly, the Altra Timp 5 is my Goldilocks shoe, and it is a true Swiss Army knife in the shoe rotation that always feels just right. This is the fourth version of the Timp I have tried, and it is one of the best Timps yet. This is largely due to the Vibram outsole upgrade and the incredible full-ounce weight drop (for a men's size 9). Over the years, I have used the Timp for vast quantities of everyday training mileage, and for racing everything from speedy, intense technical courses, all the way up to 100 km at calmer paces on tamer trail surfaces.

The Timp 5 is also a very capable road-to-trail offering. During this test, I included some road mileage throughout and the cushioning was comfortable, as expected. When I run roads, even in road shoes, I am constantly alternating as much as possible between the pavement and the natural surface (grass, dirt, pine straw, mulch, etc.) right at the border of the sidewalk or the road shoulder. I know, I know! My parents and grandparents would be quite disappointed in my incidental and hopefully forgivable trespassing at the margin of a few front yards. Anyway, the Timp 5 was perfect for every surface change and transition. Unsurprisingly, I truly enjoyed testing the latest version of the Altra Timp. I highly recommend the new Timp for any runner looking for a very versatile, zero-drop trail shoe to join the ranks of their shoe rotation.

Our In-Depth Look

Upper

Loucas: "Constructed of tough, durable mesh with well-placed overlays and a strong toe bumper, the Timp 5's upper combines top-notch step-in comfort, excellent lockdown, and Altra's signature spacious toe box all in a true-to-size package. The well-padded tongue (attached at the top to keep out debris, but not gusseted in a way that encircles the foot) ensures no discomfort from the laces, while avoiding being too thick or restrictive.

The ankle collar and heel cup are nicely cushioned for additional comfort over long miles. I have not had the chance to test the Timp 5 in hot steamy weather or submerged creek crossings, but I would guess the upper might be on the slightly warmer and less breathable side. However, I do not expect drainage or dry-out time to be an issue based on the performance of the previous models. While wearing the Timp 5, I felt thoroughly secure even without lacing the top eyelet, which I almost always do (and eventually did with the Timp 5 even though it was not strictly necessary). In summary, the Timp 5's upper delivers a secure, seriously comfortable, protective, and irritation-free on-foot experience that I can never get enough of."

Midsole

Loucas: "Eminently comfortable from step-in, the Timp 5 has the ideal stack height and quality foam to make me feel protected on the run. The Timp 5's midsole retains a lighter weight with enough agility to keep things exciting.

The midsole has a flexible and compressible underfoot feel that leans toward the firmer side, but with the just right hint of sink-in give at impact. The firmer feel is necessary and preferred for most trails except for smoother, groomed fire road-type trails. The Timp 5 does not require a break-in period, but I suspect a good portion of runners will appreciate the way it becomes more longitudinally flexible and a hint softer after the first handful of miles. The foam is not responsively bouncy, it just compresses a touch to soften impacts. This foam execution is almost perfect for a runner like me, providing the right balance of protection from impact, rocks, and roots with enough muted ground feel to naturally and fluidly place each foot strike."

Outsole

Loucas: "Make no mistake, the Timp 5's Vibram Megagrip outsole is the headliner of this update, and the addition of the new compound represents a years-long wish come true for me. On technical, rocky terrain — including some light mud, a few very shallow rivulet crossings, and some wet rocks — I did not have a hint of slippage and felt confidently glued to the trail. The lugs are highly reminiscent of the original Mont Blanc, likely 3.5 to 4.0 mm deep, on the medium-smaller end, and fairly closely spaced. This helps make the Timp 5 a solid road-to-trail shoe, but with plenty of sticky traction to tackle burly technical terrain."

Comparable Models

Altra Timp 5 vs. HOKA Speedgoat 5

Loucas: "The Timp distinguishes itself from other shoes within the category with its relatively lighter weight and zero-drop offset. The Speedgoat is noticeably softer underfoot, making the ride less inherently stable compared to the Timp. I also appreciate all the space the Timp's toe box provides."

Altra Timp 5 vs. Topo MTN Racer 3

Loucas: "The MTN Racer is likely the closest comparison to the Altra Timp 5, as both shoes have a similar weight, lower drop, and spacious toe box. That said, the MTN Racer 3 has a 5-mm drop and a more noticeable toe spring, which definitely distinguishes the shoe's ride from the Timp's. What works better for you will likely come down to individual preferences. Personally, if you could not tell already, I prefer the Timp."
