Individual Thoughts

BrycenOverall Score: 8.5/10

I thought the Pegasus 40 was great, and it truly lives up to the daily workhorse designation. These shoes really could do it all and were perfect for walking around the office, running daily mileage, and were more than functional when lifting weights or doing agility drills.

These shoes would have been perfect for me when I was a high school athlete playing lacrosse and balancing different types of training. Given how comfortable and breathable the Pegasus is, I would have been able to wear them to school daily and then transition to workouts after the school day, thanks to their lightweight, durable construction.

The Pegasus is not the most protective shoe, and there are better shoes for long-mileage runs, but the Pegasus' versatility was more than worth the trade-off. Furthermore, the comfort for daily use is exceptional, in my opinion. If you want a reliable shoe that you know will get the job done no matter the workout or run on the schedule, then the Nike Pegasus 40 is a great option for you.

MarieOverall Score: 8/10

The Nike Pegasus 40 is a very solid trainer that handled everything I threw at it. I ran on a variety of road surfaces and even some mulched paths, and I never had a problem with traction or lockdown. The ride was also very consistent, and though I wanted a little more protection for my longer-distance efforts, the Pegasus was excellent for my day-to-day 3- to 4-mile runs.

Also, there are very few trainers that can transition as seamlessly as the Pegasus from running to other activities. With it being the big 40 for the Pegasus, I was expecting a bigger update from Nike, but the upgraded upper was very comfortable and an improvement over the previous version. The Pegasus 40 will continue to be a great workhorse for beginner runners or those looking for a versatile workhorse.

Our In-Depth Look

Upper

Brycen: "The upper has offered a lot of comfort with no irritation, whether I was wearing them in the office, weightlifting, or running. The Pegasus 40s are great for casual wear, providing excellent breathability and a comfortably secure fit. I had a lot of confidence transitioning throughout my daily routines, and that comfort continued to shine through on the run."

Marie: "The updated upper is a nice improvement from the previous model, providing a high level of comfort and an accommodating fit. Even though my foot runs a bit narrow, I believe the Pegasus would be a good option for those with higher-volume or wider feet, as the upper material seems adaptable. The mesh was also breathable, and I always felt very secure while wearing the Pegasus 40."

Midsole

Brycen: "Overall, the underfoot feel of the Pegasus is soft. However, it did take a few runs for the midsole to break in, and over the first couple of runs, the underfoot feel was firmer than I expected. The midsole softened up after around 5 miles, and the ride was very smooth with a solid energy return that allowed me to pick up the pace when I wanted to push.

I do wish the Pegasus was a little more protective with a little more foam underfoot, and I would not recommend it for runs over the 10-mile mark. For everything else, the Pegasus is a versatile workhorse, and for a daily trainer, it has a lot to offer."

Marie: "The midsole provides some bounce but not an explosive return at toe-off, and overall speed is not the Pegasus' top attribute. Like Brycen, I also wished they offered more protection, but the Pegasus 40 was still a highly reliable shoe.

For me, the sweet spot was my daily running within the 3 to 4-mile range. Also, the Pegasus offers the versatility to perform very well for cross-training exercises and activities with its inherently stable platform. It is an excellent shoe for beginner to intermediate runners and those who balance running with other activities."

Outsole

Brycen: "I took the Pegasus 40 on many surface types, including gravel, boardwalk, pavement, asphalt, and well-groomed dirt trails, and the Duralon and BRS 1000 rubber outsole did not falter in any of these environments. I even was able to play tennis in the Pegasus, which not only speaks to their excellent level of traction but their versatility and inherent stability, as well. Furthermore, I have not noticed any abnormal signs of wear after the testing period."

Marie: "Being a daily trainer, the Pegasus 20's outsole is one of the highlights of the shoe. The waffle pattern offered excellent traction. I ran on cement, grass, and even some mulchy paths, and I never had any difficulty. My husband noted that the shoe seemed a bit loud and slappy on the road, but that was likely more just me as I began to tire and slowed the pace."

Comparable Models

Brycen: "The Pegasus is a daily trainer listed under the neutral road running category on our website. Compared to similar models like the adidas Boston 11, ASICS Cumulus and Nimbus, and New Balance Fresh Foam 880, the Pegasus, without question, rises above the competition in terms of durability and versatility.

The Boston 11 and Nimbus are more protective and also a bit more responsive underfoot, but the Pegasus is more stable and can perform off-road much better than the models listed above. Also, I would not recommend lifting in the Boston or Nimbus, whereas the Pegasus is always ready for any activity."

Marie: "Both the Pegasus and ASICS Cumulus provide a lot of comfort, as well as durability. The Cumulus feels softer underfoot with a slightly bouncier foam compound. That said, the slightly firmer Pegasus enabled me to tease out a wider variety of paces and incorporate more cross-training workouts."
