The New Balance SuperComp Rebel is an all-new performance trainer, meant to make every run feel faster. With a carbon-infused plate that's bottom loaded (layered underneath all the midsole foam rather than sandwiched in the middle) and soft but swift geometries, it's got everything you need to get your turnover moving. We are loving the cushioned, energetic ride for training runs, speed workouts, and long runs.
- The efficiency of a racing super shoe at the price of a performance trainer
- Makes tempo running fun and easier than other shoes in the silo
- A comfortable, secure fit for a fast shoe
- Shoe clearly wants to go fast, so "easy run" experiences can be affected
- Exposed rearfoot plate scrapes and scuffs over time
- Could be more cushioned to extend its range farther

What is the New Balance SuperComp Rebel v1 made for?
Formerly the SuperComp Trainer, the newly rebranded New Balance SuperComp Rebel justifies the brand's name change by revolutionizing its experience. What was previously a good, capable performance training option has been elevated to something that feels universally new and propulsive on foot. Instead of saving the fun for race day, the SuperComp Rebel brings serious performance to every day mileage.
Bringing Infinion superfoam, lively race-day geometries, and a bottom-loaded carbon-infused plate together has resulted in a shoe that will get your turnover going without sacrificing the comfort and stability you need to pound out daily mileage.
New Balance nails the execution of its marketing campaign: "Make Every Run Feel Faster." It's an innovative, exciting feeling shoe with impressive versatility, but which excels as a longer-effort performance trainer, and mespecially for faster days.
Our Breakdown
Performance
Let's cut to the chase. The New Balance SuperComp Rebel is a stellar shoe when used as a longer-effort performance trainer. It gives athletes an efficiency boost that's usually only found in "true" super shoes, alongside the cushion and comfort needed for daily wear and tear.
The Infinion superfoam has a plush element and feels good underfoot, but it responds well and bounces back appreciably when we put pace and force into the shoe. It feels best at tempo-range, more energetic paces, but it doesn’t punish you outright at slower paces. You can feel the energy potential under your feet when going slower, almost asking to go faster, but it’s not uncomfortable or awkward like some other speed trainers feel at slower paces.
The outsole is minimal and provides good traction. Combined with the light upper and midsole, the overall feeling of the shoe is blissfully light on foot.
The carbon-infused plate is light and propulsive, but not SO propulsive that I feel out of my league as a recreational runner. This plate will perform well for a WIDE range of running levels.
The shoe does feel like it has a maximum speed capacity, with the toe rocker activating early and dramatically, but then staying a little bit lower than we would have liked for faster-than-5k efforts. The shoe also felt like it had a maximum range capacity, with the rigidity of the plate feeling less than ideal past the 15-mile mark. But, again, for workouts or uptempo mileage where you are in the shoe's comfort zone, we found the shoes to be exceptional.
One final note is the durability of the carbon-infused plate. While most of us didn't experience any issues, Cameron experienced significant scuffing on the plate of his right shoe. He's a heel striker who tends to come down harder on the right side due to a stiff left ankle, so if you tend to load a lot of weight and/or energy on one foot versus the other, this may be something to keep in mind. That said, the plate itself is still performing well at the time of this review.
Comfort
Underfoot, the New Balance SuperComp Rebel has a fantastic, bouncy ride, with the cushioning being one of our favorite aspects of the shoe. There's a fun factor there, and the shoe successfully avoids feeling overly soft or mushy. While the plate feels ever-present, the overall underfoot sensation is comfy and pleasant.
The heel collar and tongue are streamlined but maintain an upscale feeling, with enough padding for comfort without adding extra weight. The tongue has a thin, flat layer of padding that is just right and offers a minimal yet effective barrier between your foot and the laces. The rest of the upper is light and breathable, with enough hold to secure the foot without being too stiff.
One of the few knocks we had against the comfort is the constant energy potential underfoot that we mentioned as a performance positive, so take this with a grain of salt. While that need for speed didn't cause any discomfort during easy runs, we could feel the shoe constantly asking to go faster. For TRUE easy runs, some of us noted that sensation wasn't our favorite. But again, the combo of softness and responsiveness underfoot makes for a protective and comfortable experience, and the SuperComp Rebels still work well enough on those easy days. It's just a trade-off worth noting.
Fit
Our team came away a little bit divided about the fit of the SuperComp Rebel. Universally, we experienced minimal chafing or heel slippage. The shoes felt snug in all the right places, especially through the midfoot while still giving us a nice amount of room in the toe box (for a fast shoe), as some of us prefer. Ultimately, the volume and width feel true to size for a performance trainer.
However, two of our testers found length-based pain points in the shoes. Grace found the SuperComp Rebels to run just a touch short and would have preferred to size up from her standard size 9 to a 9.5. Lia noted a small blister that formed on her third toe during one of her longer runs, but it would not deter her from keeping the shoe in rotation, nor would she want to size up.
Comparison
New Balance SC Rebel v1 vs ASICS MEGABLAST
"I found the Megablast to feel taut underfoot. It’s quick, but it doesn't have the sink-in, high-bounce feel of the SC Rebel v1. Both shoes are great for long runs that are a bit uptempo. The greater amount of foam underfoot in the Megablast makes it the leg-saving choice if your long run nears or goes beyond 2 hours. However, the way the SC Rebel v1 returns energy, I found it to be a more enjoyable experience and one that better mimics race-day super shoes." -Jonathan
"The MEGABLAST and the SC Rebel are both great for long runs and have bouncy foams. The MEGABLAST is a bit firmer and more taut, and its height and geometries feel more platform-like. It also doesn’t have a plate, which some runners might like for less stiffness underfoot. The SC Rebel’s foam has a slightly softer feeling while still being very responsive, which is only enhanced by the carbon-infused plate. For my preferences, the SC Rebel wins here." -Lia
"These are two of my favorite shoes, but I feel they serve slightly different purposes. I love the MEGABLAST for any long run at any pace. Because of the extra stack underfoot, I’ll happily take them up and over 24-mile training runs, while the SC Rebel caps out closer to 2 hours for me. For mid-length long runs of 90 minutes at a steady effort I'd hands-down pick the SC Rebel. For my longest runs, I'm going with the MEGABLAST." -Cameron
New Balance SC Rebel v1 vs Mizuno Neo Vista 3
"While the Neo Vista 3 has a fun bouncy midsole setup, the narrow fit in the forefoot doesn’t work for me personally. The toe taper of the Neo Vista 3 leaves my toes too crowded, which causes my feet to cramp after about 20 minutes. The SC Rebel’s fit works much better for me, secure but lets my toes/feet move naturally, and has that fun bouncy ride with an added touch of softness that I love." -Lia
"The sock-like upper of the Neo Vista isn’t for everyone. I don’t mind the secure fit, but I prefer the lockdown I get from the SC Rebel. Overall, I really love the ride and fast feel of the SC Rebel, especially when I’m picking up the pace. If I’m cruising over 18 miles, I might enjoy some extra stack underfoot with the Neo Vista." -Cameron
"On the surface, both shoes are very bouncy, which makes them fun. However, the Neo Vista 3 is much more of a cruiser. It’s fine for some uptempo pace, but it’s not assistive like the SC Rebel v1. The Neo Vista 3 also feels heavier on foot. But in contrast to the ever-present plate of the SC Rebel v1, the more flexible plate in the Neo Vista 3 is barely noticeable. Due to this, the Neo Vista 3 lacks the efficient propulsive nature of the SC Rebel v1.
If you want a shoe that leans more into pure comfort with the range for long runs and daily training, go with the Mizuno. If you want a purpose-built performance trainer for long run race prep, the New Balance is the clear choice." -Jonathan

Individual Thoughts

Cameron
We test so many shoes that sometimes they all start to blur together. It takes a special shoe to clearly stand out and provide a truly unique ride. The SC Rebel has delivered and has been a delightful tool as I’m ramping up for my next marathon. 10 mile progression run? Smashed it. Took an extra turn and accidentally turned a 15-mile run into a 19-miler? These were ready for the long haul.
There is currently no shoe I’d rather take for 90 minutes at a steady pace. Daily runs are fun, and they really do make you feel energized and fast. Personally, they didn’t fully match my stride at my faster paces (5k pace range), so I’ll stick to the marathon-pace efforts in these. The fit, comfort, energy, and fun that comes with these shoes is incredible, and they’ll be in high consideration as we think about the best shoes of 2026.

The SuperComp Rebel v1 is an excellent execution of a versatile and fun performance trainer. And I don’t mean “jack of all trades, master of none.” I mean that this shoe is an exemplary success of a highly energetic AND highly comfortable running shoe, without making sacrifices—a seemingly impossible feat, but somehow New Balance has pulled it off.
I love a soft midsole no matter what type of shoe I’m running in, and the use of Infinion foam in the SC Rebel is awesome. Even though there’s nice cushioning underfoot, the energy return is quite high, which is only enhanced by the plate. Speaking of which, the carbon-infused plate is effective enough to satisfy elite runners in their speed workouts, yet approachable enough for hobby runners to take their running to the next level.
The fit of the shoe is nice and secure. I tend to prefer a roomier toe box, but even though my toes didn’t have a lot of wiggle room here, none was needed. The upper comfortably held my feet in place without weighing me down or giving me egregious blisters. As someone with a wider foot, this was a nice surprise and a huge win.
It’s a great shoe for daily running, speed workouts, tempo runs, and long runs. The only reason I didn’t give it a straight-up 10/10 is that I personally prefer a more casual trainer for true easy runs. That said, the SC Rebel can handle easy runs comfortably, especially for inviting the occasional pick-up. It loves to go fast. Every time I grab these shoes, my run is injected with fun, energetic flavor. It definitely deserves its flowers!

For me, the New Balance SuperComp Rebel v1 is the most exciting shoe of 2026. I haven’t had a chance to run in the Topo Athletic Specter 3, which is another performance trainer released this year and is getting a lot of praise.
My greatest callout for the SC Rebel v1 is how it made my runs easier. I was ticking off miles at a faster pace than normal for a given heart rate zone. I was running zone 2 and zone 3 efforts at a conservative increase of 30 seconds faster per mile than daily trainers and non-carbon-plated performance trainers.
One downside of the SC Rebel v1 was it was too bouncy for me at 10k-and-faster paces. But as a shoe for long tempo runs, progression runs, and fartleks, this is my first choice. The other downside is the prominent plate. There is enough research now that we know loads are applied to the body differently in stiff, plated shoes compared to non-plated shoes.
As such, I am limiting my use in this shoe to one day a week. But it’s the one day I look most forward to.

Being newer to running, I was a little nervous about trying a plated shoe for the first time, but I’m so happy the SC Rebel v1 was my introduction to the plated trainer space. The SC Rebel was such a delight to run in and honestly made running really fun for me. I felt like I had the perfect amount of extra oomph to get through my longer runs, while still being able to easily pick up the pace when I wanted to.
I’m not a gal who loves longer runs, but I really think these helped change my mind, especially as I started thinking about getting into higher distances. The cushioning is next level, and I truly felt like I was bouncing on air, especially on the days when I really didn’t feel like a run was possible.
I’m still getting used to performance shoes like this, and the SC Rebel was a little less stable than what I typically gravitate toward. That said, I think that will change as I build up some of those key muscle groups that help plated super trainers shine, which is ultimately why I’m not giving them a 10/10 just yet (although I can definitely see them getting there).
When race day comes around, I already know what I’ll be choosing: the SC Rebel v1.
