Cushioning Level
Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.-
Minimal
14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.
-
Low
19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.
-
Medium
24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.
-
High
29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.
-
Maximal
35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.
Stability Level
-
Neutral Running Shoes
Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.
-
Stability Running Shoes
Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

The HOKA Speedgoat 7 is for you if...
- You want a comfortable max-cushion trail shoe that will elevate your confidence.
- You need a shoe that feels light, responsive, and secure on a variety of terrain.
- You seek a grippy and versatile shoe for both faster trail efforts and longer off-road adventures.
What is the HOKA Speedgoat 7 made for?
The HOKA Speedgoat stands out as a trusted choice for trail runners who demand reliability in challenging conditions. A versatile workhorse, the Speedgoat combines cushioning, grip, and trail-ready performance into one highly capable off-road shoe. Its stable platform and dependable grip make it suitable for everything from technical terrain to long mountain adventures, making it a true "go-anywhere" option for serious trail runners.
Reviewers raved over the first several versions, but then found themselves wanting more from version 6. Many found the Speedgoat 6 too stiff and uncomfortable, feeling almost wooden underfoot. We’re happy to report that version 7 returns to what makes the Speedgoat a great trail shoe: the midsole has softened for more balanced comfort, while still delivering nimble confidence. Also, an updated upper provides better lockdown and breathability, and durability is increased in high-wear areas.
Unlike more aggressive, race-only trail shoes, the Speedgoat 7 remains accessible to a wide range of runners. With its responsive midsole foam and aggressive outsole design, it provides excellent traction and a smooth, controlled ride on uneven ground, while also offering protective cushioning for longer distances. It feels secure and protective without being overly heavy, striking the balance between durability and performance.
Our Breakdown
Performance
The Speedgoat 7 is built as a versatile, high-performance trail shoe, and it absolutely delivers. Stable, grippy, and dependable at varying paces, it performs equally well on steep climbs, fast descents, and rolling terrain. The aggressive outsole provides excellent traction on loose gravel, mud, and rocky surfaces, while strategic rubber placement enhances durability in high-wear zones. We even took these out in some wet conditions, and the Speedgoat 7 upheld that solid, confident feel.
The shoe did everything I needed. It provided the right amount of comfort and support. I was able to test on some rainy days, and I felt solid and secure (which included wet leaves on some steep areas).
Runners familiar with previous Speedgoat models will appreciate the refined midsole feel, improved stability, and smoother transition, resulting in a more confident and efficient trail experience. For performance, the shoe did everything we needed.
Comfort
Trail shoes often prioritize protection over softness, but the Speedgoat 7 manages to strike an excellent balance between cushioning and trail-ready responsiveness. Its midsole provides ample comfort for long distances without feeling overly soft or unstable on uneven terrain.
The updated upper is breathable and supportive, offering a secure and comfortable fit on warmer days, some cold wet days, and even during long hours on technical trails. The tongue is on the thinner side, yet did not create any points of discomfort, even in the case of one tester who tends to prefer a thicker tongue.
I love the cushioning in the midsole. It’s just the right amount of softness without being mushy or sloppy—it’s very comfortable and protective, without losing the performance aspect.
Fit
The Speedgoat 7 runs true to size and offers a secure, performance-oriented fit that keeps the foot locked in place on technical terrain, which is essential on uneven trails for preventing unwanted movement inside the shoe.
For those of us who prefer a little more width, the shoe isn’t necessarily the highest-volume option, but it is comfortable enough and appropriately fitted for a trail shoe to provide security without feeling constrictive. The midfoot has a snug and supportive hold, while the toe box allows enough room for natural toe splay during longer efforts. Overall, the fit feels dialed in and trail-ready without being restrictive.
Individual Thoughts

Torsten
I recently tested the HOKA Speedgoat 7, and I have to say, it immediately impressed me on the trails. Right out of the box, the shoe feels both lightweight and protective--ready to tackle technical terrain the moment you step into it. On rocky paths, loose gravel, or steep climbs, the Speedgoat 7 provides the perfect balance of cushioning, grip, and responsiveness.
It absorbs impact on rough trails without feeling soft or sluggish, while still giving enough feedback for confident footing and fast-paced sections. Even on technical descents, the shoe feels stable and controlled, never harsh or unstable, making it approachable for runners of all levels.
The fit is secure and locked-in, keeping my foot stable on uneven terrain. The updated upper is breathable, supportive, and comfortable, giving a “barely-there” feel even during longer, demanding runs. The aggressive outsole offers excellent traction and durability across a wide range of trail conditions, giving me confidence whether climbing, descending, or covering long distances.
Overall, the Speedgoat 7 is a highly versatile trail shoe that truly delivers. Protective, responsive, and comfortable, it’s a shoe I’d happily reach for again and again--perfect for runners who want a single pair capable of handling technical trails, long-distance adventures, and everything in between.

Linda
For me, the Speedgoat 7 is a solid 9 out of 10. After some crazy Georgia storms, I got to test this shoe on some very slick rock and wet leaf trails. The traction was secure and provided me with the mental confidence I needed. Equal kudos to the midsole for its perfect blend of cushion and stability to offer comfort and support. Not worrying about the shoe’s performance so I can just concentrate on the trail is key for me!
The reason this shoe isn’t a 10 for me is the thin tongue, which is just not my favorite, and the low volume/height of the toe box. Neither hindered the performance or the comfort during any of my test runs, but every time I put on the shoes, those items did give me pause due to past issues from other shoes/brands. But to make sure I end in a positive since I did really like this shoe, extra points on the sweet black and white styling!!!

Lia
The HOKA Speedgoat 7 is a comfortable, fun, and versatile trail shoe, with enough lug depth and grippy traction to give me confidence on my adventures. As someone who prefers lighter terrain for trail running, it’s really nice to have a shoe that feels supportive, stable, and trustworthy when I hit some rockier patches (figuratively and literally) so that I can stay upright and moving.
The midsole is well-cushioned, comfortable yet protective, and even with the high stack (which I tend to gravitate toward), I didn’t feel too disconnected from the ground. My feet are on the wider side, and for me the fit is snug and secure without being overly narrow or tight. I didn’t experience any uncomfortable squeezing or rubbing.
When getting out of the shoes after my runs, I did notice some redness around the outsides of my first and fifth metatarsal heads—which is indicative of the snug fit for my foot type—but this didn’t result in any blistering or discomfort for me. Overall, I’m very happy with the Speedgoat 7 and will continue to take these out on the trails!
