Cushioning Level
Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.-
Minimal
14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.
-
Low
19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.
-
Medium

-
High
29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.
-
Maximal
35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.
Stability Level
-
Neutral Running Shoes
Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.
-
Stability Running Shoes
Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

The Nike ACG Pegasus Trail is for you if...

What is the Nike ACG Pegasus Trail made for?
Nike has put a lot of effort into the launch of their ACG branding and updating their trail lineup accordingly. From their apparel to the race-ready ACG Ultrafly and the heavy-duty ACG Zegama, Nike has put their bright orange stamp all over the outdoor space. The ACG Pegasus has arrived to help ease both everyday trail runners and trail-curious runners into that space. While those first two offerings are geared towards high-speed or high-endurance efforts, this ACG Pegasus makes a point of staying approachable and low-key.
Most times, you aren't racing through the woods. Most times, you aren't going for a multi-hour long run in gnarly mountains. For those of us who want something competent and secure for our standard trail days, or for those of us who want to transition from roads to the trails for the first time, the ACG Pegasus serves as a great, accessible building block.
After taking this shoe out in the California hills, we found that it works really well at easy paces on a variety of terrain, with reliable traction and a pleasantly accommodating fit in the toe box. There is still room to grow with dialing in the underfoot feel, especially when it comes to the road portion of road-to-trail, but ultimately we believe this shoe will work well for many runners, and is certainly a step in the right direction.
Our Breakdown
Performance
The ACG Pegasus performed its best for us when we ran casual paces across mild trails or easy-rolling "cob" pathways that have a few rocky patches and plenty of hoofprints from cows and horses. When we had to go faster or hit more demanding stretches, the shoe stepped up to those challenges appropriately. Our toes were close enough to the ground that we felt nimble across trickier sections, but there was enough stack under our heels to keep us feeling protected.
However, when we transitioned to stretch our runs in the opposite terrain-based direction, onto roads and asphalt, the shoes left us a bit disappointed. For trails, the shoes have an appropriate level of cushioning and responsiveness. However, on roads, they felt firmer than we would have liked, and less forgiving.
We felt like dialing the rigidity of the foam back just a bit could still have remained trail-appropriate, while being more enjoyable on the roads. Thankfully, we found that the lugs struck an excellent balance of performing well on trail, while fading from notice on pavement.
"I was surprised by how little I noticed the lugs on pavement, since they aren’t overly aggressive and still offered good grip."
As it stands, the ACG Pegasus is a reliable option with enough versatility to be enjoyable as a standard daily trainer.
Comfort
The Nike ACG Pegasus is a versatile trainer that kept us reasonably comfortable from our doors to the trailhead. We appreciated the mesh upper, which offered great lockdown to keep our feet secure over uneven surfaces while remaining breathable during warmer-weather runs.
It took a brief break-in period, but after three or four runs, the midsole cushioning felt a little softer and more flexible. Even after breaking in, the cushioning maintained a slightly rigid feel that kept the shoe significantly better suited for trails than for roads, from an underfoot comfort perspective.
"For those who liked how the Pegasus 42 felt on the road, the ACG Pegasus lacks that full Air Zoom unit, so it doesn’t have the same hint of bounce. For me, these are great on the trail, but not as great on the road."
Finally, the adjusted drop (from 10 mm in the previous Pegasus Trail to 8 mm in the ACG Peg) didn't impact our strides and we appreciated the little bit of extra cushioning under our toes.
Fit
While our testers have had some issues with Nike sizing and fits in the past, we were unanimously happy to report that the ACG Pegasus fits true to size in regards to length, width, and volume. The slightly roomier toe box allowed our toes to spread out naturally, and even the midfoot had a little bit of roominess (in a good way) which we weren't accustomed to.
The tongue has a balanced amount of padding, and we were able to get good lockdowns with the laces biting into our insteps.
The only negative mark we have about the ACG Pegasus' fit harkens back to the arch feeling, mentioned in the Comfort section. For Lia, the arches became less noticeable on trails after an initial break-in period, but remained too noticeably prominent for enjoyment on pure, flat pavement during an out-and-back road-to-trail jaunt. Aside from that note, the upper disappeared comfortably on foot.
Comparison
Nike ACG Pegasus Trail vs. Brooks Ghost Trail
"The Brooks Ghost Trail is a lot more similar to its road counterpart than the ACG Pegasus is to the Pegasus 42. The Ghost Trail feels more cushioned, but narrower in fit than the ACG Pegasus. If I were to pick between the two for just trail, I would pick the ACG Pegasus because it has a roomier fit and feels like it would give you more control and have better groundfeel than the Ghost Trail. For road-to-trail, the Ghost Trail feels like it would offer a more consistent underfoot experience, though I would try to get it in a wider size." -Lia
"The ACG Pegasus is slightly less cushioned than the Brooks Ghost Trail, but the fit is more accommodating to more foot sizes, as the Ghost is a little more narrow in the toebox." -Katie

Individual Thoughts

Katie
Overall, I found the Nike ACG Pegasus to be a versatile and comfortable hybrid trainer that performs best for runners who like to transition between roads and trails.
The breathable mesh upper and secure lockdown created a comfortable fit, while the slightly roomier toe box allowed for natural toe splay. The cushioning felt comfortable yet slightly firm and rigid, making the shoe feel more at home on dirt and gravel than on pavement. The lug pattern provided reliable traction on varied terrain without feeling overly aggressive on roads, adding to the shoe’s versatility.
I believe the ACG Pegasus is a great option for runners looking for one shoe that can comfortably do it all.

Lia
The Nike ACG Pegasus is a great throw-and-go shoe for everyday trail miles. The upper fit comfortably for my wider feet, especially with the roomier toe box. The toes feel low to the ground and have nimble groundfeel, while the heel has just enough volume to feel protective. Paired with the reliable traction and lugs on the outsole, these shoes gave me control and confidence on my casual trail jaunts.
I experienced a bit of a break-in period to get used to the underfoot feel, but by my 3rd or 4th run, the shoes and I were getting along well. The reason for this was the shape of the arches, which were bulbous in volume. The feeling softened on the trail over time—I might even say they contributed to a protective underfoot feel post-break-in—but it remained a prominently obstructive sensation on flat pavement in a road-to-trail context. For this reason, the ACG Pegasus was a trail-only shoe for me personally.
All in all, the ACG Pegasus pleasantly surprised me, and once they’re broken in, they are great for navigating a variety of terrain for your everyday trail needs. I will be keeping these on hand when I need something closer to the ground for nimbleness and confidence.
