Cushioning Level
Cushioning level, or stack height, refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of cushioning below the forefoot as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.-
Minimal
14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.
-
Low
19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.
-
Medium
24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that fall near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are verstaile and great for all types of runs and distances.
-
High
29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.
-
Maximal
35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.
Stability Level
-
Neutral Running Shoes
Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.
-
Stability Running Shoes
Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

What is the KIPRUN Kipride Max made for?
Developed through more than a decade of research and athlete testing, KIPRUN focuses on making reliable, high-quality running gear accessible to a wide range of athletes. KIPRUN's Kipride Max reflects that mission, combining durability, comfort, and thoughtful design in a way that supports both newer runners and those building consistent mileage.
The Kipride Max delivers a well-balanced ride that prioritizes comfort without sacrificing control, making it a strong option for runners of all paces and experience levels. We came to find that it performs best during easy runs, recovery sessions, and longer miles, where consistent cushioning and impact absorption matter most.
At the heart of the shoe is KIPRUN’s SOFTECH+ midsole, a soft yet responsive foam that offers noticeable protection underfoot while still providing a subtle energy return. Rather than feeling overly plush or sluggish, the cushioning works with your stride to keep transitions smooth and steady. The breathable warp-knit upper enhances overall comfort, while the fit system helps create a secure, locked-in feel throughout each run.
Overall, we say the KIPRUN Kipride Max stands out as a dependable max-cushion trainer designed to keep runners comfortable, supported, and moving efficiently across everyday miles.
Our Breakdown
Performance
The Kipride Max is a phenomenal shoe for a variety of runs. The geometries of the midsole keep the shoe not too mushy and run-focused. With a wider base, there is more confidence and support from the beginning of the run to the end, maintaining its stability.
There is some energy return that keeps you from feeling like you are sinking in, like some other max cushion shoes. There is no need to worry about the security of the shoe; they do exactly what you need them to do and won't throw any curveballs your way. Along with the outsole, we expect the shoes to be very durable. We prefer them for recovery/easy runs, but have no issues using them for longer runs.
"When comfort and cushioning are king, the Kipride Max has taken over the thrown."
Comfort
From the moment you step-in the shoe, you can tell the intent of being a highly cushioned daily trainer was met. Kicking it off with the underfoot experience, it’s a soft foam that provides a plush and soft ride, emphasizing the comfort the shoe provides on long runs.
Coming all together in the upper, it is stretchy and soft with a thinner tongue to refrain from being bare to the bones. However, our reviewers found the sockliner to be narrow where it noticeable and annoying.
"The midsole makes me happy. When I need to cruise around without worrying about pace, it feels great."
Fit
Like most European brands, the sizing tends to run a bit short. We would size a half size up in order to go on longer runs. We did not experience any issues or hot spots overall. The lockdown is great, and the fit is accommodating in general; there could be more volume in the shoe. We found out that the upper will adapt well for different foot widths do it being a stretchy warp knit.
"I think the upper will adapt well for different foot widths."
Comparison
KIPRUN Kipride Max vs Nike Vomero 18
"The Vomero 18 and KIPRUN Kipride Max both scream comfort when you wear them, making them suitable for long runs, recovery runs, and base miles. The Vomero does have a higher drop of 10mm, vs the Kipride Max with 6mm. You can tell the Kipride Max has extra cushioning in the forefoot compared to the Vomero, and the foam used in it feels more lively.
Both can be worn to pick up the pace if needed, but would not be my choice for any real speedwork. The Vomero has a better fit for my feet, with a little more of an accommodating forefoot fit and they run true to size in length, while I’d need to size up a half size in the Kipride Max for longer runs." -Becky

Individual Thoughts

Cameron
The Kipride Max is the first KIPRUN shoe I’ve tried, and I’m really impressed. It’s a comfortable, plush, soft shoe that feels great on easy runs. I took it up to 13.1 miles nice and slow and was comfortable from start to finish. For $160, this really does stack up well to its max-cushion competitors, coming in at $10-$20 less than most. This doesn’t, by any means, suggest that this shoe is “cheap." The shoe is high quality, performs well, and should last for quite a few miles.
My only real issue was the sockliner. I found that it was narrower than the actual inside of the shoe, so I’d feel the medial sockliner edge under my foot as I ran. It didn’t cause problems, per se, but it was annoying to fiddle with. For what I want with this type of shoe, the Kipride Max checks every single box, and fixing my sockliner concern would bump it up towards the top of my easy-day list. Great work and welcome to Running Warehouse, KIPRUN!

Becky
As my first KIPRUN shoe, I was not sure what to expect from the Kipride Max. I was pleasantly surprised from the first step in, where the immediate feeling was the soft knit upper, stretching to accommodate my feet, and loads of cushioning under my feet. My first run in them was a double run day, which can sometimes feel tough to get out the door for the second run. My feet welcomed the soft, resilient foam. It’s a great choice for days when your body and feet just want that extra comfort.
