Stack Height
Stack height refers to how much shoe is between your foot and the ground. For this category, we reference the amount of material below the forefoot, as the heel height will be equal to or greater than the forefoot height.
Learn more about stack heights and how we measure them.-
Minimal
14-18mm. The shoe has a thin midsole that allows for a natural running experience. Racing shoes and minimalist shoes are common here. These shoes offer a feeling of being connected to the road or trail.
-
Low
19-23mm. The shoe has a slightly cushioned feel and may feature added cushioning technologies. Performance training shoes and some trail shoes are common here. These offer protection during footstrike but prioritize a lightweight, grounded experience.
-
Medium
24-28mm. These shoes have a stack height that falls near the middle of the spectrum. The shoes in this category are versatile and great for all types of runs and distances.
-
High
29-34mm. The shoe has a thick midsole and ample cushioning. These shoes are highly protective and absorb more impact than the body.
-
Maximal
35mm plus. The shoe has an extremely thick midsole and extra cushioning. The focus is on protection and soft foam underfoot with hardly any ground feel.
Stability Level
-
Neutral Running Shoes
Neutral shoes support the foot through a normal range of arch collapse and generally do not have built-in technology to correct movement.
-
Stability Running Shoes
Stability shoes are a great option for those who overpronate or need added support. These shoes help to limit the inward rolling motion of the ankle while running or walking and assist in guiding the foot straight through the gait cycle.

The ASICS Novablast 6 is for you if...
- You think cushioned heel impact, paired with responsive toe-offs, sounds like a winning combination
- You want a daily trainer that leans you forward, towards your toes
- Previous Novablasts worked well for you, but you wished they would last longer
What is the ASICS Novablast 6 made for?
Since its debut in 2020, the ASICS Novablast has pushed the envelope for uptempo daily trainers. It has consistently emphasized high stacks of foams that are soft yet responsive, so you get all the comfort you need for daily mileage, but also the speed you need to pick things up on workout days.
Although the Novablast series has consistently kept this goal, ASICS has never been afraid to tweak the formula to better reach that goal—midsole foams, uppers, outsole rubbers, and much, much more have evolved over the past 6 years. Sometimes these adjustments have been applauded as glowing successes. Sometimes they've been met with loud, frustrated critique. But version 6 feels like it's gotten the ingredients right.
With a superfoam trampoline pod in the forefoot, a refined upper, and a healthy injection of reliable ASICSGRIP rubber across the outsole, the Novablast 6 does NOT feel like a complete reinvention of the shoe. What it DOES feel like is an intentional, successful response to critics who took issue with the Novablast 5's durability, traction, or peppiness.
Our Breakdown
Performance
As an energetic daily trainer, the ASICS Novablast 6 hits the mark. We found it to be a great option for consistently paced daily mileage and some uptempo workout days. The trampoline pod of ASICS' FF TURBO2 superfoam in the forefoot did its job of adding some extra pep to the shoe.
Across the board, we felt like the Novablast's forefoot kept our toe-offs responsive and lively, while the heel and midfoot sections (where ASICS' FF BLAST MAX is the highlight) remained comfortable and cushioned enough for daily mileage. The added ASICSGRIP across the forefoot worked to keep us stable and confident. Across both wet and dry surfaces, indoors and outdoors, it didn't matter; the Novablast 6 had the traction we needed to pick up the pace, and last us for many runs to come.
The Novablast 6 is an incredibly versatile shoe. It offers excellent grip, performs well on daily runs, and transitions seamlessly to gym workouts.
One downside was that the foam (especially in the forefoot) skewed a bit too dense and firm for some of our daily mileage preferences. While the trampoline pod in the forefoot helped us pick up our paces in an energetic way, Grace and Ali noted their preferences for a softer, more comfortable foam for their everyday shoes. But we're beginning to blur the lines between performance and comfort, so let's turn the page to...
Comfort
The first big thing to note about the Novablast 6's comfort is its sizeable heel-to-toe drop. With 42 mm of soft, bouncy foam in the heel and 34 mm of firmer, snappier foam in the forefoot, the Novablast 6 will bring you up on your toes and may not feel as level as some people prefer.
If this is a feeling and build that you're comfortable with, though, then the Novablast 6 executes its intent very well. Heel-to-toe transitions, while running, are smooth, and it feels like the cushioned heel and the springy forefoot both accomplish their unique goals without feeling disconnected or creating a "this-then-that" sensation in your stride.
The heel collar felt natural and comfortable. The upper is lightweight and breathable, as advertised, and fits well. It isn't a plush upper like you would find in long-run focused ASICS shoes, but instead threads the needle between performance-oriented and comfort-oriented, able to live with a toe in both worlds.
Along those same lines, as stated in the performance section, the pairing of foams underfoot created a feeling that was slightly firmer than some of our testers preferred. If you are a runner who craves plushness (over-foot or under-foot) for your daily mileage, then the Novablast 6 may leave you wanting.
I would say the midsole was on the firmer end, but it did not feel heavy; I appreciated that because it eased some of the pressure on my arches and avoided activating a trigger point I have from a past stress fracture.
Fit
The Novablast 6 offers a secure, confident, true-to-size fit that worked for a variety of our foot types.
Loucas called out how well the Novablast 6's toe box worked for him, as he's had issues with the toe boxes of other ASICS shoes like the MEGABLAST or the Trabuco Max 3 in the past. With those other ASICS, Loucas has felt their toe boxes pressing against his big toe. He had no such issues with the Novablast.
Similarly, Grace keeps a critical eye out for ankle collar issues and abrasion. She reported that the Novablast 6's ankle collar gave her a good lockdown without creating any of the hotspots that she was monitoring for.
Finally, Aliyah can be particular about arch fits, due to previous injuries that can resurface when an arch isn't dialed in quite right. She found the Novablast 6 to work well for her, and her injuries stayed dormant.
It feels strange, applauding a shoe for not doing something "wrong," but we put the Novablast 6 through the gauntlet with a tricky lineup of testers. So to see it come out the other side, unscathed and without critique, is impressive and noteworthy.
Comparison
ASICS Novablast 6 vs. Mizuno Neo Zen 2
"The most noticeable difference for me, and likely for other heel strikers also, is the heel cushioning. The Novablast has a slight edge compared to the Neo Zen, giving more ease when it comes to the impact I could endure. There is a noticeable (but not much) different on how the shoe fits regarding lockdown; neither is bad to me, but it would depend on the runner’s personal preference.
They both have great energetic components, but I would choose the Novablast over the Neo Zen due to the trampoline pod being very distinct in the Novablast."
-Aliyah
"The Neo Zen 2 feels taller throughout, but the balance of the foam (firmness/softness) feels largely similar. This is maybe a minor thing, but the Zen 2 is harder to put on, with its snugger sock-fit entry. And the Zen 2 feels a little narrower alongside my toe tips. In its favor, the Zen 2 gives me my preferred lower drop, and more protection under my forefoot."

Individual Thoughts

Loucas
Alright, this might seem strange to land on an 8.5 after rating the comfort, performance, and fit all 9 or more. But I always favor the zoomed-out overall impression, because the whole is always different than the sum of the parts.
A lot of this comes down to the fact that I don’t have much interest in daily trainers anymore, having been spoiled by the fun of performance trainers and super shoes. I feel at odds with myself because I believe I’ll always advocate for the necessity and usefulness of a good, relatively simple daily trainer, especially one that has a little dose of energy or fun factor.
So, having been spoiled by other categories of shoes that are even more fun for me, the Novablast 6 feels like a good, solid shoe, but it doesn’t scream GREATNESS. I credit ASICS for applying precisely the clutch updates they needed to, while otherwise leaving well enough alone.
Again, the superfoam puck in the forefoot is a spot-on addition. And if my suspicions are correct about the main Blast Max foam being denser/firmer than v5, if that translates to greater longevity, that would be exactly what ASICS needed to accomplish with this update. Time will tell. For now, it didn’t become my new go-to favorite, but I enjoyed testing it, and it left me with a favorable impression.

Overall, I think the Novablast 6 is a great shoe, and I really enjoyed testing it. While it’s a bit firmer than I typically prefer, so I don’t see it becoming a regular part of my rotation, I really appreciate its versatility. It performs well on runs, transitions seamlessly to the gym, and the added grip provides confidence in a variety of outdoor conditions.

Aliyah
Overall, the shoe was not a disappointment. I decided to add the Novablast 6 into my HYROX training days as I run steady-paced 5ks. I stay consistent with my pacing due to past injuries (stress fracture and previously torn MCL) and a high preference to run in stability shoes due to severe overpronation. If it happened to be a stability shoe, I could see myself pushing to go at a faster pace.
I fully enjoyed the cushioning in the shoe as it eased my worries about the impact my joints would have with having sciatica, no cartilage in my knee, and previously stated injuries. The trampoline pod was a great addition to the forefoot of the shoe, giving it just the right amount of energy at toe-off. I also loved the ASICSGRIP as I switched between running indoors and outdoors, and I did not have to worry about how the traction would be on different types of terrain.
The fit was good overall. I did wish it gave a little more in the midsole so I would not have to potentially re-lace the shoe, but for those who enjoy a more secure fit in that area, this would be a great fit.

The Novablast 6 will definitely stay in my shoe rotation as I get ready for my upcoming HYROX race and half marathon. I really enjoyed the fit and comfort, even with the denser foam. One of my favorite things about this shoe is that I can wear it for just about anything. Whether I am doing a lunch run or a workout at the gym, it has been an option I gravitate towards.
As I have spent more time training, I have realized that versatility is one of the biggest things I look for in a shoe, and this one really delivers. I honestly think I am only going to like it more as my training continues and I keep pushing myself.
