What is the Mizuno Wave Rider 30 made for?
The Mizuno Wave Rider is one of the longest-standing, fan-favorite daily trainers of all time. For the last 30 years, it’s provided a reliable daily experience for new and experienced runners alike. In the last few years, Mizuno has shown their willingness to challenge norms through daring projects like the Rebellion Pro and Hyperwarp series. With wild, bold projects on the rise, they’ve made sure that the Wave Rider also changes with the times.
To honor the shoe's 30th anniversary, Mizuno has completely overhauled their beloved daily trainer with completely new materials, a new experience, and a new heel-toe drop. Its reliable identity remains intact, but it marks a bold anniversary gift from Mizuno to the running community. The Wave Rider is a versatile standard daily trainer, tuned to handle any daily mileage. It has plenty of stack height and cushion underfoot, a WAVE plate to stabilize and propel you forward, and all the fixings that make up a tried-and-true mileage master.
Our Breakdown
Performance
All in all, we were unanimously pleased by how well Wave Rider 30 performed. As a standard daily trainer, it did exactly what we would expect, providing a smooth cruising experience. Those of us with sensitive knees were glad the Wave Rider is full of cushion, but isn’t overly squishy. Both Linda and Aliyah prefer the added support of stability shoes, but they didn’t have issues taking this neutral trainer out on the roads. Specifically, they mentioned that they could feel the WAVE plate underfoot, adding smooth stability to their runs.
“I typically run in stability shoes, and the noticeable WAVE plate kept my strides stable and fluid.”
This is the kind of shoe that we’d wear around the office, run some errands, and then hit some true running mileage in. Because of the reimagined materials and heel-to-toe drop, the shoe felt nice and smooth. It isn’t made to be a fast shoe, but the underfoot experience does well to give daily mileage a hint of energy and whisperings of speediness.
The outsole performed well both on pavement and indoors. From road to treadmill to daily walking, this shoe checked all of the essential boxes for us. While it is a comparable weight to its competitors, the shoe did feel a little heavy at times. However, that didn’t stop it from cruising through longer runs when we were ready to roll.
Comfort
For a daily trainer in a competitive price range, it offers some premium comfort features. There are plush touches of padding around the collar, plenty of breathability, and the upper provides a soft hug around your foot.
Underfoot, we’re all on board with the cushioning layout, finding the balance between slightly springy and medium softness. For such a highly stacked shoe, we’re glad it feels plush enough for longer runs without feeling too mushy.
“For a standard daily trainer, I felt it had some premium comfort features (padded heel collar, and soft, breathable upper).”
Aliyah, due to previous stress fractures, has some trigger points that occasionally act up with the wrong shoe. The Wave Rider treated her very well, soothing her injury post-flare up and providing enough comfort to log some extra mileage. As we roll through the shoe, there aren’t any weak points or dead zones. Put simply, it’s a comfortable shoe that is becoming a go-to for us.
Fit
Overall, the shoes fit well. For most of us, we found a proper balance where it wasn’t too snug and wasn’t too loose. They were true to size and fairly adaptive, even as our feet swelled up on longer runs.
“It finds the sweet spot of enough space without being too snug or too loose.”
That being said, Linda did experience a low-volume feeling in the forefoot that may have benefitted from a wider option or half a size larger. The snug feeling didn’t cause issues during our mileage, but it was noticeable during try-on. Colvin also recommends wearing thinner socks; otherwise, the perfect snug balance may be too snug. Over longer runs, he mentioned slight hotspots popping up in the forefoot, but nothing too worrying.
Comparison
Mizuno Wave Rider 30 vs. ASICS Gel Cumulus 28
"This is a harder comparison because both shoes offer an excellent underfoot feel for a cushion for a daily trainer. I would give the edge to the Wave Rider slightly because of the subtle energetic underfoot feel thanks to the plate. However, the plate does add weight, making it a close race between the two." -Colvin
"The Cumulus has a lower stack height than the Wave Rider, which was noticeable to me. While they are both neutral, the ASICS shoes do not have a plate, while the Mizuno pair does. I felt a little more stability in the Mizuno, which made it my pick over the Gel Cumulus because I overpronate severely." -Aliyah
Mizuno Wave Rider 30 vs. Nike Pegasus 42
"The Pegasus is a classic daily training shoe, and the Wave Rider outclasses it. The underfoot feel is better in the Mizunos, and I prefer their subtle spring over the Pegasus." -Colvin
Mizuno Wave Rider 30 vs. Brooks Ghost 18
"The Wave Rider fits and feels much better than the Ghost for me. The Mizunos feel more plush and energetic while offering a soft upper and solid fit." -Colvin

Individual Thoughts

Aliyah
I enjoyed this shoe, and Mizuno overall is starting to become a top brand for me. The adaptive fit and comfort are the highlights that got me hooked on the Wave Rider 30. Being true to size and having a secure lockdown system make it a reliable go-to, and it's nice not having to worry about relacing or not having enough room once your feet start swelling.
The cushioning throughout the midfoot and heel gave me a sense of relief and comfort as a heel striker. A few days before running in them, I hit a trigger spot from an old injury. It was phenomenal when I was running in these without agitation. I took a leap of faith doing a long run in these shoes, and I did not regret it.
Typically, I do not do long runs in neutral shoes due to my severe overpronation, but the Mizuno WAVE plate gave me enough stability that I did not have to worry about injuring myself again.

Colvin
Overall, the Wave Rider comes across as a dependable, do-it-all daily trainer that shines in comfort, fit, and versatility more than outright speed. It delivers a well-cushioned underfoot feel with a touch of spring that feels natural through heel-toe transitions, making it just as suitable for long walks as it is for easy to moderate daily runs.
The foam strikes a nice balance of softness with a hint of responsiveness. The wave plate adds subtle structure and encouragement to pick up the pace without feeling aggressive. Fit is a standout, landing in that ideal middle ground of secure but not tight, with a soft, comfortable upper that works best with thinner socks. Avoid thicker socks!
It feels a bit heavier than others in its category, and I wouldn’t recommend the shoe for fast workouts or race day; its sweet spot is as a reliable everyday option for runners who value comfort and general running performance that can easily move from daily life into daily training.

Linda
Overall, I enjoyed testing the Mizuno Wave Rider 30. The shoe was designed as a neutral daily trainer, and that’s exactly how it felt. The WAVE plate provided just enough support to keep the shoe from being too mushy and allowed someone like me (who prefers true stability shoes) to have some good test runs. I would personally not go longer distances with this shoe, but anyone who just needs some mild stability will be fine.
I’m also a one-speed runner, so this shoe fit my needs as a daily trainer. The fit was a tad off for me, as it was lower volume in the toe box and a tad narrow. A half size up from my normal would probably take care of that. I loved the white neon color, and it's always a plus to enjoy the visual when I'm lacing up!
